DHCP
Setup for Macintosh OS X
The default installation of MacOS X has all of the necessary
software you need to use your connection to connect to the Columbia
network. This document describes how to set up your Mac running
OS X for use with a DHCP connection on the Columbia campus.
Before following the instructions in this document, make sure
your ethernet cable is plugged into the correct wall jack, as
well as the correct ethernet port on your Macintosh. This guide
assumes your Mac has a properly installed ethernet card/adapter.
If you have not used your Macintosh on another network, chances
are that if you plug in the network cable it will work without
additional configuration/installation. After you plug the network
cable into the jack and the computer, you may need to reboot
the computer, depending on your configuration. If your connection
doesn't work after this step, you will need to follow the directions
below to setup your computer for DHCP on the CU network.
Step
1: Boot up your Mac. When presented with the desktop click
on the System Preferences icon in the MacOS X dock.

Step
2: Now, click on the Network icon to open the Network
Preferences panel.

Step
3: Once in the Network Preferences panel, change the Show
drop menu till it displays Built-in Ethernet. (Depending on
your Mac version this may be called "Ethernet built-in",
"Ethernet", or some version with the word "Ethernet"
in it.) Now, change the Configure menu to Using DHCP. Everything
else in this box should be left blank (see below for what
the preferences box will look like) When you are finished,
click Apply Now. Your network configuration will now be applied
to your system. Finally, close the network preferences box.

Step
4: Your computer may ask whether you want to save the
current configuration, click Save.
