for Dial-Up: Windows XP

Requirement

A valid ABAC account and password
- Any computer with Windows XP
- Modem 56K (v.90)

Step 1 Install your Modem
Install
your modem according to the manufacturer's instructions.
To
confirm your modem is properly installed, click Start and
then the My Computer icon and select View System Information.
Click the Hardware tab. Click on the button labeled Device
Manager. If your modem is installed correctly, you will see
your modem listed under Modems. If your modem is not listed,
you should re-install your modem according to the manufacturer's
instructions.
Step 2 Configure Dial-up Networking
1.
Click Start, click Control Panel, then double-click Network
Connections.

2. Click Create a new connection under Network Tasks to start
the New Connection Wizard.

3. Select Connect to the Internet and then click Next.

4. Select Set up my connection manually and then click Next.

5. Select Connect using a dial-up modem and then click Next.

6. Type ABAC as your ISP name and then click Next.

7. Enter the modem pool phone number you wish to dial then
click Next.

8. Be sure that you have unchecked the option
use this account name and password when anyone connects to
the Internet from this computer.

Important:
Do not enter your user ID (User name) and password at this
screen.
Click Next.
9.
If you would like to add a shortcut on the desktop, select
the option Add a shortcut to this connection my desktop. Click
Finish.

Step 3 Test Your Connection
1.
Click on Start, Connect To and select ABAC or double-click
the ABAC shortcut on your desktop.
2. Enter your account ID (i.e. u431xxxx, g451xxxx) and password
at the login screen and then click Dial.

3. Depending on your modem, you may hear the modem dialing.
You
will see a pop-up window indicating that your modem is dialing
and connecting.
You
will also see a pop-up window indicating that your ID and
password are being verified.
4.
You are now connected to the Assumption University Modem Pool.
You
will see the terminal icon in the lower right-hand corner
of your screen, indicating a successful connection.
You
will now be able to run network programs such as Netscape
or Tera Term Pro.
To
disconnect, exit from each of the network programs you started.
Double-click
the terminal icon and then click Disconnect on the Columbia
A Status window to end your connection to Columbia University.

Appendix
A - Default TCP/IP Settings: Configure for DHCP
For
dial-up networking connections, TCP/IP settings will be assigned
to you by the
ABAC network. The default settings that Windows uses (as shown
below) are correct for this type of configuration.
To
make sure that your computer is configured correctly, go to
the Start -> Settings
-> Control Panel, select Network,
click the TCP/IP protocol and
select Properties. Check that
the following items are correct:
