1: Using Older Versions |
In Eudora mail programs before 4.0, there were two versions: Eudora
Light and Eudora Pro. The "light" version had a reduced
set of features and was free. The "pro" version had
the full feature set but required a license fee. Eudora Light
and Eudora Pro were two separate software packages.

2: Learn About the New Plan |
Eudora version 4 was released in 1999. Starting with this release,
the software was consolidated into a single Eudora package that
served both Light and Pro functions, along with a "sponsored"
mode, which offers full features without cost, but displays advertisements.

3: Know the Issues |
As of Eudora, 4.3.1, released in late 1999, there are several
problems with the new Eudora mail. It is common for software to
go through several releases after a major restructuring before
all errors are found and fixed. Users are complaining of many
software errors, and that the new Eudora sends unauthorized mail
messages to Qualcomm. The errors or bugs are mostly in the area
of disappearing messages and mailbox views, and in displaying
advertisements after paid mode is enabled.

4: Using Spy Software |
When using ad-supported software, information is often exchanged
between the user's computer and the software company. The user's
computer may send information about which ads are appropriate
for the user, and then download the ads. There have been reports
that Eudora stretches this concept by sending information about
the nature of email messages the user sends and/or receives, after
which Qualcomm chooses the appropriate ads. Many users are uncomfortable
with this.

5: Upgrade or Wait |
Users are advised to avoid these problems until they are corrected,
by continuing to use the existing Eudora Light and Eudora Pro
products. These tutorials are intended for users of Eudora Light
version 3.0.6 but future versions of Eudora 4 are expected to
be similar in function.
