Learn the File Structure

Step 1: Learn File Conventions

Learn File Conventions

In order to keep the Eudora file area from getting cluttered and set up a safe backup plan, it helps to know something about the Eudora file structure. Starting with Windows 95, a new convention on directory structures was started where the static elements of a program (executable files etc.) are placed under "Program Files" and data files go under "Windows / Application Data."

Step 2: Learn Eudora's Structure

Learn Eudora's Structure

Since Eudora Light has only minor modifications from the days before Windows 95, it follows the older Windows 3.1 convention of putting program files and data files together in one directory structure. Unless otherwise specified in option settings, all Eudora files go into the main Eudora area.

Step 3: Check Attachments

Check Attachments

From the main screen of Eudora, select Tools / Options / Attachments and you'll see a button which allows you to select the directory for placing attachments. Although Windows started calling directories "folders" in 1995, Eudora still calls them "directories" since the word "folder" refers to a group of mailboxes. If the button is empty, you can click it and select a directory.

Step 4: Check Attention Sound

Check Attention Sound

In the Tools / Options list, choose the category "Getting Attention." If the "Play a sound" option is checked, it will play the sound (WAV file) when new mail arrives. In the example, the button is empty because no sound has been chosen. Click the button now.

Step 5: Choose New Sound

Choose New Sound

When the "choose sound file" dialog box comes up, you can browse to the location of your favorite attention-getting WAV file and select it. Windows \ Media is a place to find a wide variety. Choose a file and confirm, or Cancel to keep the default Eudora tune.
