Set Sending Preferences

Step 1: Set Host Account

Set Host Account

From Eudora's main screen, choose Tools / Options, then select Hosts. The SMTP server should be the outbound mail server provided by your ISP or email provider. The Ph and Finger options are directory services not supported in all environments. They may be left blank.

Step 2: Go to Sending Mail Options

Go to Sending Mail Options

Scroll down to the "Sending Mail" Category, and select it. Here you can see that some options appear in more than one category. Your SMTP server, for example, appears in this category too. Options updated in one category automatically update in the others.

Step 3: Set Sending Mail Options

Set Sending Mail Options

Set the return address to that address you want to appear in the "from" field of messages you send. Normally it's the same as your email address. "Domain to add" is for people who send email to many recipients in the same domain. For example, a Texaco employee dials into a corporate network and sends email to lots of people with the domain @Texaco.com. In that case, the domain would be entered here and would not have to be put into all the addresses. Most users will leave it blank.

Step 4: Set Check Box Options

Set Check Box Options

Immediate send is for users with a constant Internet connection. If this is unchecked, sent mail will be placed in the Out box and will wait until the user takes a "send" action. That will be "send queued messages" or "check mail" depending on the setting of the next box, "send on check." Word wrap allows you to compose messages without typing returns.

Step 5: Complete Check Box Options

Complete Check Box Options

The next box, "may use quoted-printable" allows Eudora to use a standard called quoted-printable to try to preserve the contents of special characters or very long text lines in the body of your message. Most users can leave it checked. Keep copies will leave the contents of Out in place after sending. Most users should uncheck the "Tabs" box because tabs are not considered good form in email.

Step 6: Set Up Signature

Set Up Signature

Leave the "Use Signature" box checked if you always put the same signature at the bottom of each email. Click OK to dismiss the options Window. Now you are back on Eudora's main screen. If you selected "Use Signature" choose Tools / Signatures / Standard. You are placed into a box where you can type your chosen signature. In the example, Harvey uses his name and a quotation. Click the lower X to exit, saving changes.

Step 7: Verify Settings

Verify Settings

From Eudora's main screen, click the New Message button. On the line between the standard Eudora buttons and the "To" address, you can verify many of the settings you just selected: quoted-printable, immediate send, tabs in body, etc. If you were composing a message to send, you'd choose your signature from the drop-down list: none, Standard, or Alternate. You can set up the Alternate signature using Tools / Signatures / Alternate. Click the lower X to exit without saving.
