Bandwidth and Security Control for PC/Notebook
As of Decenber 20,2006


This is to confirm that the Internet is primarily for teaching and learning, and for which the university Internet resources shall be accordingly allocated. Students and all AU employees please take the following actions, immediately, as the control system is now already active:

1. Update the windows on schedule, or use other operating systems (Linux, MAC OS, Unix), and the personal firewall should be turned ON.

2. Install antivirus program, and update the engine/patterns on schedule

3. Avoid overusing the Internet bandwidth (heavy downloads using any program accelerator which create several connections to the server(s).

AuNet Center has monitoring and control systems installed. The only objectives are to enforce such policy and to help prevent and control the spread of virus attacks to the university networking system, the spread which in turn rapidly downgrades the Internet performance. Consequently, the following actions will be taken with the computer which does not comply with the following minimum security requirements:

Actions: Block all accesses to the Internet, except to www.security.au.edu to install OfficeScan

Virus patterns not updated
Actions: Block all accesses to the Internet,except to www.security.au.edu to install OfficeScan or to update the patterns

- Windows are not updated
Actions: Block all accesses to the Internet

Condition: For any computer which engages in the following activities

- P2P Download/Services
Actions: Drop the packets

- Heavy Downloads
Actions: Shape the traffic

- Non-productive activities
Actions:
Shape the traffic

Originate any attack
Actions: Block all accesses, and may be taken to office of Student Affairs for disciplinary actions, if necessary
